To rent space for a private function or to promote a special event, you can contact the City of Henderson Department of Cultural Events and Tourism.

The Henderson Department of Cultural Events and Tourism manages several facilities that can be made available for special events, art exhibits, cultural arts, festivals or private rentals.

Henderson City Hall and Events Plaza

Effective September 8, 2009, Henderson City Hall will be closed every Friday.

The operating hours for Henderson City hall will be Monday through Thursday from 7:30am to 5:30pm.

The closure is a cost-cutting measure for the city.

Not all City of Henderson buildings will be closed on Fridays.

The following City buildings will continue to remain open on Fridays:

• Emergency Facilities
• Senior Center
• Recreation Centers
• Convention Center
• DSC Inspection Services

The closing of City Hall on Fridays is in addition to the city’s other cost-cutting measures such as budget cuts, elimination of employee benefits, a hiring freeze, travel restrictions and other policy revisions.

“Closing City Hall on Fridays is estimated to save $1.7 million annually,” said City Manager Mark Calhoun.

Hubble Telescope

The Henderson City Council unanimously approved the budget for the new Space and Science Center.

As reported in the Las Vegas Sun, the site under consideration is 160 acres on Galleria Drive east of US 95. This land is already owned by the city.

This property does not currently have any infrastructure in place, so, roads and utility lines will need to be in place before any building can start.

Henderson Nevada based Acciona Solar Power will partner with Clark Energy Group  to both build and manage The Fort Irwin Solar Energy EUL project.

According to the Energy Boom article “Clark-Acciona will develop photovoltaic and concentrated solar thermal technologies at an industrial scale there, the Corps says. Their plan features a phased implementation framework that accounts for site characteristics, constraints, available resources, current and future technologies, cost, access to transmission lines, and length of approval and connection processes at each stage of construction.”

The plan for what will become the largest solar generating plant in California, is to produce 1250 gigawatts hours (GWH) per year.

The Henderson-based company, Acciona Solar Power, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Acciona Energia of Madrid, Spain.

This is the second year in a row that Henderson has received this recognition. Henderson is the only community in Nevada to receive this endorsement.

In the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Kim Becker, a spokeswowan for Henderson Parks and Recreation is quoted as saying, “It’s an honor for us. It shows us we’re going in the right direction with everything we’ve been doing.”

Becker also said that Henderson has been able to improve old playgrounds and develop new ones thanks to grants from the Bureau of Land Management over the years.

Henderson has designated Sept. 24 as its official “Come Out and Play Day.” During the day, more than 400 children at 37 different Henderson sites will celebrate the fun and importance of play with simultaneous activities in the afternoon. Activities include art contests, relays, swimming, jump rope and more.

In a press release issued on July 22, 2009, Amazon.com announced they had reached an agreement to acquire Zappos.com.

According to the press release, Amazon intends to purchase the online shoe retailer for approximately 10 million share of Amazon common stock and $40 million in cash for an estimated purchase price of almost $850 million.

Jeff Bezos, Found and CEO of Amazon.com said, “We see great opportunities for both companies to learn from each other and create even better experiences for our customers.”

Tony Hsieh, CEO of Zappos, added, “We will continue to build the Zappos brand and culture in our own unique way, and we believe Amazon is the best partner to help us do this over the long term.” He further explained the sale/merger to employees in a CEO letter sent to employees by email and posted on their blog.
