All you young artists, don’t forget to submit your entry for the Coloring Contest.

The hikes are designed for those who might not be acquainted with hiking in the Mojave Desert. They’ll be treated to some spectacular sights in the Lake Mead Recreational Area.

Here’s a rundown of the planned hikes:

Monday, December 28th – Arizona Hot Springs

This six-mile moderate trail is lead by Ranger Emily. You’ll be exploring the White Rock Canyon which leads to the Colorado Rive and a well-known hot spring on the Arizona side of the river.

Tuesday, December 29th – Majestic Canyon

This three-mile moderate walk is lead by Ranger Megan. You’ll get to walk along  a winding wash that ends at a dry waterfall. The Muddy Mountains will turn purple as the sun sets, so don’t forget to bring your cameras.

Wednesday, December 30th – Anniversary Mine

This five-mile moderate hike is lead by Range Emily. It consists of a hike up Lovell Canyon, a desert wash and the remains of an abandoned mining site. You’ll also pass the Rainbow Canyon on the way to the Anniversary Narrows.

Thursday, December 31st – Historic Railroad Trail

This five-mile moderate hike is lead by Ranger Megan. On this journey you’ll hike along an old railroad bed and through five large tunnels. You’ll also learn some fascinating history about this cultural landmark.

Light up your community and participate in the City of Henderson’s 2009 Outdoor Holiday Decorating Contest.

This contest is presented by the City of Henderson’s Commemorative Commission.

So, have fun decorating because this contest is open to any home or business within the Henderson city limits.

Visit the City of Henderson Website to enter. The deadline to enter is Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 5:00 pm.

Judging: The judging takes place on Monday, December 7, 2009 – make sure to have your holiday lights on by 5:30 pm and leave them on until midnight.

Awards: The awards will be presented at the Tree Lighting and Awards Ceremony at 6:00 pm on Friday, December 11, 2009 at the Henderson Events Plaza, 200 Water Street.

The theme for this year’s WinterFest Parade is “Toys on Parade.”

Cash prizes, totaling $1,500 will be awarded in two different categories:

• Best Overall Theme
• Best Costume

The Parade is only one aspect of the three-day WinterFest holiday celebration. This annual event also features other family-friendly activities including:

• and holiday entertainment from Dec. 10 to Dec. 12, 2009

Veterans Day Ceremony

The City of Henderson annually celebrates the lives and actions of military personnel that serve and protect this nation.

Each year people that have served the country, those that continue to fight, and the friends and family of veterans join together to commemorate their service and sacrifices.

This year, on Saturday, November 7, 2009, the ceremony will begin at 10:00am.

Be sure to attend and show your support for our military.

This year the event will include:

• a presentation of the color by the Basic High School Marine Corp JROTC
• a special musical tribute
• the traditional placement of a memorial wreath at the base of the wall
